Q) BT is only £17.99 a month so why should we use Airzone Networks for our internet connection?
A) Be careful when comparing 2 different products. There are many reasons why our service is better than the available ADSL packages. The cheap "residential" style services normally have very high contention ratios, slow upload speeds and monthly usage limits. They are aimed at the ocasional home user and not business or heavy home user.

Q) What is a "Contention Ratio"?
A) When you are sold an internet connection the bandwidth is shared between yourself and a number of other customers. The total amount of customers sharing the connection is the contention ratio. This means that in theory that if you had a contention of 50:1 that your connection could drop as low as a 50th of what your service can offer. This is normally the thing that seperates business broadband from home broadband in that home broadband will have a high ratio of around 50:1 but business broadband will offer 20:1 and below. This is also the main reason why business broadband is more expensive than home.

Q) What is meant by bandwidth?
A) Think of your internet connection as a motorway. The more lanes on the motorway, and the higher the speed limit, the more traffic it can carry. So the wider the "bandwidth" and the faster its speed, the more information it can carry.

Q) I have purchased a 2Mbps connection but when I download something from the internet the fastest I can get is around 240KB/Sec?
A) The first thing to understand is the service is in "bits" per second and downloads are normally measured in "bytes" per second. There are 8 bits in a byte which means that you will need to multiply your download rate by 8 to get your true download speed. Other things that can affect your download speed include:

  • The performance of the server hosting the requested website/download
  • The bandwidth of the connection between the hosting server and the Internet
  • Contention ratio
  • Your PC (Some components may impose speed limitations)

Q) What is recommended that we need to have to connect to your service?
A) As your equipment will be permanently connected to the internet we recommend that you have some form of firewall in place to prevent hackers. We can supply firewall functionality as an additional service. We also recommend that you run some form of virus protection on all your pc's to prevent viruses and hackers using trojan horses. If you are connecting directly from a pc we will need there to be a spare ethernet port on the back of the computer. We can provide a network card for this purpose at installation time at an additional charge of £10+vat but most modern pcs have them as standard.

Q) We use Apple MAC's. Can we still use your services?
A) We should be able to support any type of operating system as long as it can be networked.

Q) What is involved in the installation?
A) If your building has not already been POP'd then our normal installation will require a 20cm square CPE to be fitted to the outside of the building however the CPE size may vary depending on service purchased. We will then run a single cat5e cable from the outside equipment to your equipment. Presentation of the link will be via a standard 100mbps ethernet connection.

Q) Is our building POP'd?
A) Point Of Presence, or POP, simply means that we already have a connection to your building. We offer special discounts for businesses in multi-tenanted buildings that have not already been POP'd. If a another company already has a connection from us in your building then we simply run an aditional cable from our current equipment.

Q) What is "Rabbit" and how can it help my business?
A) Rabbit (Remote Area BroadBand Inclusion Trial) is a special organisation that is designed to financially assist companies who do not have or have limited ADSL in there area. The grants available can pay for the installation and a years subscription so is worth a look if you are in a rural area that we can cover.

Q) Are there any hidden costs or am I likely to receive a large bill for over using my connection?
A) There are no hidden costs. All our services are supplied with no download or upload limits so you can stay online for as long as you want without having to worry about a hefty bill.

Q) Will our phone line be affected if we use your network?
A) Our service is supplied via a wireless connection so your current phone line will not be affected.

Q) We are concerned by the security aspect of wireless technology. Are we right to be worried?
A) Older wireless technology was classed as insecure due to the encryption algorithms being hackable. These issues where addresses some time ago but the stigma around insecure wireless networks still remains. We use the latest encryption technics to ensure our network is secure however you must remember that we do not own the whole internet and therefore cannot prevent hackers sniffing your traffic once itenters the public domain.

Q) What happens with our current email addresses?
A) You should have no problems using your current email addresses as long as your current provider does not cease your account. If you have your own domain then we can host this for you along with your website and email. We can also provide you a sky-mail.net email account if you do not have your own domain and wish to cancel your current provider.
